Nelson Earns Southland Player of the Week Honors
CORPUS CHRISTI – Junior forward Will Nelson of the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi basketball team has been named Southland Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced today. Nelson scored 23 points in each of the Islanders' two victories last week.
The Port Allen, La., native wreaked havoc on a pair of teams from nearby his hometown, starting with the Islanders' 78-64 win over Southeastern La. on Thursday, Feb. 28. Nelson went 5-for-7 from the field, but did the bulk of his damage at the free-throw line, where he was 12-for-14. His 23 points were one shy of his career high, and he added nine rebounds, as he finished one carom short of his fifth double-double of the season.
He posted an impressive encore on Saturday, as he led the Islanders to a 68-64 win over Nicholls in their home finale for the 2012-13 season. The junior went 9-for-10 from the field, including 3-for-4 beyond the arc, and snared 12 boards for a double-double. He was a perfect 5-for-5 for 14 points after the half, as he helped the Islanders shoot 69.2 percent (18-for-26) from the field after the break.
All told, Nelson was 14-for-17 from the field on the week, including a 10-for-11 mark from inside the arc. The junior is averaging 13.5 points per game on the season to go along with his 7.6 rebounds. In conference play, he has scored 14.5 points in addition to grabbing 8.2 boards on the season.
The Islanders will take their two-game winning streak on the road this week, as they head to Natchitoches, La., for a matchup with Northwestern State on Thursday, March 7. The Islanders and Demons will tip off at approximately 8 p.m. and the game will be carried live with Yannis Koutroupis on the call on NewsRadio 1360 KKTX.
