Men's Basketball Announces Signing of Cole Martinez

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's basketball team has signed Cole Martinez (San Antonio/Air Force Academy Prep) to join the Islanders for the 2012-13 season, head coach Willis Wilson announced today. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound guard played high school basketball at Central Catholic High School in San Antonio.

"Cole can flat-out shoot the basketball," Wilson said. "Three-point shooting was one of our weaknesses last year, and Cole should make a significant impact in that area from the first time he suits up for us. He is also a young man with strong character who represents the type of young man we want our players to be off the court."

In his lone year at the U.S. Air Force Academy Prep School in Colorado Springs, Colo., Martinez averaged 17.8 points per game in helping the team to a 27-4 record. He added 3.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game, while also gathering 1.2 steals. He went 76-of-84 from the free-throw line to shoot an amazing .905 on the season. He was named the Joe B. Hall MVP for his performance at the Lackland Air Force Base Tournament in December 2011.

At CCHS, Martinez averaged 22.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists for Head Coach Romy Vela and the Buttons in 2010-11. He added 1.4 steals per game and shot 84 percent from the free-throw line on the year, as his 905 points were tops in the city of San Antonio. He was named the 2011 Player of the Year and a member of the 2011 Super Team. He led Central Catholic to a perfect 8-0 district record and was named District MVP.

During his high school career he was named TAPPS First Team All-State in 2010 and 2011, and was a TABC All-State honoree in 2011. He also was a TAPPS Academic All-State selection in both 2010 and 2011, and is a member of the National Honor Society. Martinez also played four years of golf at Central Catholic, earning four letters and serving as the team captain his final two seasons.

Martinez joins the six players who earlier signed with the Islanders men's basketball program – high schoolers Jelani Currie, Dale Francis and Brandon Pye and junior college transfers Zane Knowles, Will Nelson and Joy Williamson.
