COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Myron Dempsey led the way with 14 points and eight rebounds, but the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's basketball team saw its second-half rally fall short, as No. 25 Texas A&M defeated the Islanders 56-43 on Saturday. The Islanders pulled as close as six in the closing minutes on a 14-0 run in the loss.
The Islanders forced 18 Texas A&M turnovers and won the battle of the boards, 39-37 in the loss. Dempsey added three steals, while Johnathan Jordan led the team with four assists and had two steals as well. Elston Turner led the Aggies with 14 points, while Ray Turner added 13 and Jordan Green had 10.
The Aggies came out red-hot shooting from the field, burying six of their first eight shots to jump out to a 16-4 lead. Jordan snapped the cold string for the Islanders with a jumper and the Islanders clamped down defensively, holding the Aggies without a field goal for a span of 6:22. But after a 5-0 A&M run made it 21-8, Jordan again snapped the skid with a leaning jumper in the lane to trim the deficit to 11.
But that's when Texas A&M – Corpus Christi went on its big run, rolling off 14 straight points, including three straight buckets from long distance to trim the deficit to just six. Dempsey started the rally with a putback, then Hameed Ali scored six straight points, including the Islanders' first triple of the game, to make it 45-33. Then fellow freshmen Jordan and Jake Kocher each drilled threes, and suddenly the visitors were within six as the Aggies took a time out.
A&M got off the schneid with Ray Turner scoring all eight points in an 8-1 run. He got a putback to make it 47-39, then a free throw put it at a nine-point Aggie lead. He added another bucket down low to push the advantage back to double digits. Then, after a Jones free throw, the Houston native converted a three-point play for a 53-40 Aggie lead. The Islanders were able to get as close as 11, but the Aggies held on for the victory.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi is back in action on Thursday, Dec. 1, when they take on Texas Tech at the American Bank Center. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. between the Islanders and Red Raiders. For tickets, call 825-BALL or visit GoIslanders.com.
