CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi basketball programs, in conjunction with the cheer and dance squads and pep band, will kick off the 2011-12 season with Islanders Invasion on Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Dugan Wellness Center. The event will tip off approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the Islanders-Southeastern Louisiana volleyball match, which starts at 1 p.m.
Islanders Invasion, which takes place in conjunction with parents' weekend, will feature introductions to the men's and women's basketball teams as well as the cheer and dance squads. The teams will then both take part in a three-point contest and the event will culminate with the men's team's slam-dunk contest. The event will conclude with a 10-minute scrimmage by each squad.
"It's a great opportunity to kick off the season and get the fans excited about the upcoming year," women's basketball coach Robert Robinson said. "It gives the fans a chance to check out the team for the first time and get excited about the basketball program."
In addition to the happenings on the court, those in the stands will be invited to take part in a number of games and contests and can win prizes at the event. The first 500 students will also be able to pick up their official 2011-12 Blue Crew T-shirts prior to the event.
Admission for both the volleyball game and Islander Invasion is $5 for adults and $3 for kids under 16 and seniors. Admission is free to all full-time students of the Island University with their $andDollar$ ID.
