Islanders Cheer and Dance Teams to Compete at UCA/UDA Camp
CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Cheer & Dance Teams along with Izzy the Islander began preparations this week for the Universal Cheer Association (UCA) and Universal Dance Association (UDA) camp, hosted by Texas State. The Islanders will compete in the four-day camp on July 11-14 in San Marcos, Texas.
Lee Rowland, Director of Strength and Conditioning, at the Island University, has prepared both of the squads for the camp with unique morning workouts at the Dugan Family Soccer & Track Stadium and at the beach on campus.
"When I work with the full cheer and dance squads I like to utilize the different facilities available such as the Dugan Soccer/Track Stadium and the beach," Rowland said. "The beach can be an excellent place to conduct a workout because the sand can provide a unique training stimulus the body is not accustom to."
Last season at camp, the dance team earned 47 blue superior ribbons in Division I, while the cheer team garnered three first-place awards in Small Co-ed Division I. Izzy also represented the Island University with an exceptional weekend. The Islanders' mascot garnered three superior blue ribbons and earned the Division I up and coming award.
The dance team returns six veterans from last season's team while the cheer team welcomes back seven.
