DENTON, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi dance team took first place in Division I at the 2012 American Dance/Drill Team Collegiate Championship today, hosted by the University of North Texas. The Islanders topped Northwestern State, which finished just one point ahead of the Islanders at last year's competition.
"I am so proud of our team," Head Cheer and Dance Coach Melanie Lowry said. "All of our hard work this year paid off with today's result. The girls worked so hard and they have earned the right to say that they took first place at nationals. This is a great day for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi and our dance program."
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi scored a 286 at the event. Northwestern State was first runner up at the competition. Soloist Irene Cornejo finished third at the event among 14 individuals among all divisions. The Islanders also collected fifth place in the academic championship for their performance in the classroom.
Full results will be posted later this evening on the ADTS website.
