Dance Team Begins Preparations for ADTS College Nationals
CORPUS CHRISTI – The 2011-12 Texas A&M - Corpus Christi dance team started preparations today for the ADTS College Nationals in Denton, Texas, on March 24, with the help of Stephen F. Austin's dance head coach and chorographer TJ Maple.
"This is the first and only year we will get to work with TJ since we will not be competing against SFA this year," cheer and dance coach Melanie Lowry said. "He is highly talented and we have the same teaching styles, so it's fun to be able to work with him."
Maple started SFA's hip hop team, the "Jack Attack" and has led the squad to two national championships and his chorography has won three National Dance Alliance (NDA) Championships. He has won six national championships with the SFA pom squad. He is a Certified Adjudicator for the NDA and is a member of the Texas Dance Educators Association.
"The team is picking it up, working hard and pushing themselves," Maple said. "They are doing what they are asked of them and I think they are going to have a great showing at ADTS."
The team will be practicing their sassy jazz routine to "She's a Lady" for nine hours today under Maple's instruction and for the next three months. The Islanders community can check out their routine, Wednesday, March 21, in the Moody Fieldhouse at 8 p.m.
"We're winning already because we have TJ," Lowry added.
