CORPUS CHRISTI – It was Senior Day for the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Baseball team, and the group did not disappoint, with the trio of Brad Porras, Jonathan Gonzales and Eric Weiss combining for nine hits and eight RBI as the team won a wild, come-from-behind victory by a 17-15 margin over the Lamar Cardinals. The win gave the Islanders a series victory over the Cardinals and second place heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

Texas A&M – Corpus Christi slugger Jonathan Gonzales was named Preseason Second Team All-Southland at designated hitter on Wednesday, earning the honor after being selected to the second team at the conclusion of last season. That distinction will have to wait until the second game of a Saturday doubleheader.

Islanders Baseball Leads Off 2012 Season Under the Lights Against Nebraska Omaha
The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team will lead off the 2012 season in the newly renovated Chapman Field on Friday night, hosting the Nebraska Omaha Mavs in a four-game set slated for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The teams will play a single game on Friday at 6 p.m., a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. on Saturday and single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday to round out the weekend.

Philip Garcia, better know as Philly among his teammates and coaches, is a senior pitcher for the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team. A year ago, the right-hander made his was into the record books with a six-save performance on the year, setting the new single-season mark for saves in a season by an Islanders pitcher. He helped the team to a school-record 27 wins and a semifinals appearance in the Southland Conference Tournament.

Marc Damon’s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning proved the difference in a 3-2 victory for the Navy squad in the opening game of the Navy/White World Series on Friday at Chapman Field. Damon went 2-for-4 in the game. Bobby Buckner had two hits and a steal in the loss.

Holland Named Louisville Slugger All-American
Senior outfielder Matt Holland (Watkins, Iowa) has been named a Third Team Louisville Slugger All-American, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper announced today. Holland is the first Islander in school history to earn Louisville Slugger All-America honors and joins Humberto Aguilar (Third Team, 2003) as the only players in Islanders lore to earn All-America distinction from any organization.
