Brett Gips begins his second season as the recruiting coordinator after serving as the volunteer assistant coach during the 2012-13 season. On the field, he serves as the team's first base coach and works with the catchers. His duties also include organizing scout day and various duties as assigned.

The Yorktown, Texas native is a 2010 graduate of Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi. Gips pitched for the Islanders during his final two collegiate seasons. He appeared in 42 games and went 2-0 with one save. Gips totaled 41.2 innings and averaged nearly four strikeouts per nine innings with 19 total punchouts. He was second on the team in games pitched (23) during the 2008 season and the 42 appearances were the fourth-most in school history. 

Gips began his collegiate career at Cisco Junior College under head coach David White. He pitched in dual roles for two seasons for the Wranglers before transferring to Texas A&M - Corpus Christi for the 2007-2009 school years. Gips recieved a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M - Corpus Christi in 2010.

At Yorktown High School, the native Texan was named Texas Sports Writers Association Class 2A All-State First Team. As a senior, he went 10-3 with a 0.89 earned run average and 186 strikeouts in 84 innings pitched. Gips threw a 2005 state best six no-hitters and set school single-season records for batting average, ERA, innings pitched and strikeouts. He won two district titles over his final two varsity seasons and was named the 2005 District 29-2A Most Valuable Player.

Gips spent the 2011 and 2012 summers as the pitching coach for the Cooperstown Hawkeyes of the Perfect Game Collegiate League in Cooperstown, N.Y. The Hawkeyes were the 2011 West Division Champions.
