Baseball Set for Makeup Game Against Baylor

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team will compete in its final midweek game of the season, as it travels to Waco for a meeting with Big 12 foe Baylor on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.

The game against the Bears was originally set for Feb. 26, but was postponed due to the threat of inclement weather in the area.

The Islanders (25-20) have won seven of their last eight games, including victories in five of their last six midweek games. Baylor (19-25) has had a tough go of it as of late, as they have dropped six of their last eight meetings. The Bears also suffered their first home Big 12 sweep since 2009 the last time out.

However, the Bears have been very tough at Baylor Ballpark prior to being swept by Kansas, as even with the three losses, Baylor is 17-7 at home this season. This also includes a 4-0 record against Southland teams at home, with wins against Lamar, Houston Baptist and Incarnate Word twice. The Bears did drop their only road tilt with a Southland team, falling against Sam Houston State in Huntsville, but will host the Bearkats Tuesday night at home to try to even the season series.

The Islanders will send Dalton D'Spain (1-0, 3.24 ERA) to the mound to make his fifth start of the season. In his last 6 1/3 innings D'Spain has allowed two runs, and boasts the second best earned run average on the team.

He will throw against a team that has had its struggles at the plate this season, as the Bears have the lowest batting average in the Big 12 by more than 30 points with a .225 team average. Baylor's leading batter is Adam Toth, who is hitting .280 at the dish. Toth is also tied for the team lead in RBIs, along with Grayson Porter, at 18.

Baylor's starter will have a much tougher opposing lineup, as Sean Spicer (0-2, 6.48) will have to face off against the Islanders' bats that have produced 445 hits this season, a mark that ranks at the top of the Southland and is 25th in the nation.

A&M – Corpus Christi has tallied double-digit hits as a team in 11 of its last 15 games. However, even in the games where they have not picked up 10 hits or more during that stretch, the Islanders have seen plenty of run production, as they are averaging 7.4 runs per game in their last 15 contests.

Brandon Tierney has paced the Islanders inside the batter's box, as he has reached safely in his last 16 games, and now owns a .360 batting average to go along with an on-base percentage of .454. He has also averaged at least an RBI a game during that stretch, with 17 runs driven in.

Tierney is also tied for first on the team in RBIs, as Cody Stephens is locked up with him at 28. Tyler Ware is right behind the duo with 27, and is tied with Tierney for the team lead with three home runs. In the weekend series against Oral Roberts, Ware hit the eventual game-winning, two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, right after the Golden Eagles had taken a 1-0 advantage in the top half of the inning.

The Islanders will then travel west to Abilene, as they will return to Southland action for a three-game set against league newcomer Abilene Christian starting Friday at 6 p.m.
