Baseball Evens Series Against UTSA with 6-1 Win

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team (12-15) picked up its third consecutive midweek victory, as it knocked off former Southland foe UTSA (16-9) 6-1 on Tuesday at Roadrunner Field.

Dalton D'Spain came away with his first career win, as the sophomore went five innings, giving up just one run on three hits.

It was a hit parade for the Islanders, as they had 14 knocks on the game with the one through seven guys in the lineup all picking up at least one hit in the game. The top two in the order had the strongest games, as Brandon Tierney and Jordan Lee both had three knocks.

The three-hole man, Kyle Danford came through with a game-high two runs driven in to make him the first Islander to hit 20 RBIs this year.

UTSA's starter, Boone Mokry, was chased from the game quickly, as he gave up three hits and two walks with the only out he recorded on a caught stealing. After giving up his third hit on a single through the right side by Tyler Ware, Mokry got the quick hook.

It was then that Jermey Filipek came on for UTSA, allowing two more runs to come in on a bases loaded walk followed by an RBI groundout by Zack Gibson, to put two more runs on Mokry's line and give the Islanders a 3-0 lead through the first inning.

With Filipek back out on the mound in the second, the Islanders were able to plate just the second earned run the righty had given up all season, as Danford picked up an RBI on a grounder up the middle to extend the Islander lead to 4-0 through the first two.

After a scoreless third inning, D'Spain gave up his first and only run in the fourth, as Jesse Baker led off the inning with a solo blast to left field, before D'Spain came back to set down the next three Roadrunner batters, making it a 4-1 lead heading into the fifth.

Both pitchers got out of jams in the fifth, as despite getting three knocks in the top half the Islanders were unable to push across any runs, while D'Spain induced a 6-4-3 double play after giving up a one-out walk in the bottom half to preserve the three-run lead.

The pitching really settled in over the next two innings, as there were no hits or runs in the sixth or the seventh. A&M – Corpus Christi got back on the board in the eighth, though, with a two-out walk and hit by pitch getting things started.

Lee and Danford then came up with back-to-back singles to plate two more runs and extend the lead up to five with UTSA only having six more outs to work with.

AJ Flores, AJ Longoria and Kaleb Keith did not let the Roadrunners do anything with those final outs though, as they combined to close out the eighth and ninth and send the Islanders home with a victory.

A&M – Corpus Christi will play the rubber match of its series with UTSA in two weeks on April 8, but will turn its focus back to Southland play this upcoming weekend with its first conference series against New Orleans, starting Friday at 6:30 p.m.
