Top Performance #4: Jonathan Gonzales Goes Off at Texas State

Graduated senior Jonathan Gonzales had an outstanding two-year career for the Islanders. He capped it off with a senior season in which he hit .323 with five home runs, 16 doubles and 43 RBI en route to earning First Team All-Southland Conference honors.

But no game during his stellar senior season was better than the Buda, Texas, native's outing on March 15 at Texas State. The righty went 6-for-6 on the game, tying the school record for hits. He drove in eight runs, one off the school record. He scored four times after reaching on two doubles and four singles. And with him leading the way, the Islanders racked up 23 runs – the second-highest total in school history – in just seven innings.

His big day started with two on and one out in the first, when he ripped a double to right center to plate Eric Weiss and Brad Porras. With A&M-Corpus Christi already up 5-0 in the second, he came to the dish with the bases loaded and one out, and this time smashed a double to left center, with Porras and Cody Stephens coming in.

After the Islanders went scoreless in the third, Gonzales legged out an infield single to start a four-run rally in the fourth that put the visitors up 13-1. In the fifth, he again strode to the batter's box with two runners on, singling down the left-field line to plate Porras for the Islanders' 14th run.

In the top of the sixth, Gonzales sent Porras scurrying for home again, when he sent a ball just inside the right-field line for an RBI single. Finally, in the seventh, the slugger capped off his day with a two-run single up the middle that pushed the Islanders' lead to 23-6, as Weiss came across the plate for the sixth time on the night.
