Baseball Hosts Final Home Games Against Lamar In Important Series

Two teams right in the thick of the Southland Conference title hunt will meet at Chapman Field this weekend, with the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team hosting Lamar in the final home series of the year.

The teams play a three-game series starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, 4 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. In addition to the importance of the games to the Islanders Southland Conference chances, the Sunday game will also mark the final home games for 10 seniors, with the players being recognized before the game.

Senior Day will recognized the careers of Stafford Brantley, Eric Weiss, Trevor Foss, Adam Hoelscher, Tim Keller, Jonathan Gonzales, Franco Pace, Tim Beard, Brad Porras and Seth Horton during their time as an Islander.

The Islanders (28-20, 13-8 Southland) are tied for second place in the league, while Lamar (33-15, 12-9 Southland) is just one more game back with two weeks to go in the season. The Islanders swept McNeese State last weekend, while Oral Roberts swept Lamar in Beaumont.

For the Islanders, Trevor Foss will go on Friday, with Trevor Belicek following on Saturday and Matt Danton rounding out the series on Sunday afternoon. The Islanders will face Jonathan Dziedzic on Friday, Will Hibbs on Saturday and TBA on Sunday.

Eric Weiss and Jonathan Gonzales are tied for the team lead with a .328 batting average on the season, with Cody Stephens following closely at .323 overall. Zach Taylor is next at .309, and Brad Porras rounds out the players above .300 with his .307 average this year. Jordan Lee is just under the mark at .293 in 2013. Gonzales leads the team with 37 RBI on the year, one ahead of Weiss and his 36 overall.

Lamar's Darian Johnson holds a .372 batting average to lead his team, with Sam Bumpers (.355), Seth Dornak (.311), V.J. Bunner (.304) and Aaron Olivas (.302) all above .300 on the year. Johnson also has a team-high 37 RBIs, while Olivas and Brad Picha are tied for second with 34 on the season.
