Early Runs Not Enough As Baseball Falls At UTSA

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Baseball team got early scoring from the offense, but it would not be enough as the UTSA Roadrunners earned a 12-5 final at Roadrunner Field.

The Islanders (19-13) saw their five-game winning streak snapped as they took to the road. UTSA (19-13) would match the early runs before eventually pulling away late for the win.

Tyler Schnuriger (0-3) was tagged with the loss after coming on in relief. Adam Hoelscher started the game, but saw limited action as head coach Scott Malone wanted to get work for a lot of guys, and threw nine different pitchers in the game.

Brad Porras led the offense with a 4-for-4 game and two RBI, while Brad Lamberti and Brandon Tierney each added two hits on the night. Cody Stephens, Zach Taylor, Jonathan Gonzales, Kyle Danford and Jordan Lee added one hit apiece. Lamberti and Danford also added one RBI each in the game.

The Islanders started the scoring in the top of the second, scoring three runs on four hits to take the lead. Porras started the action with a single up the middle, and advanced to second on a single through the left side by Tierney. Lamberti followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Porras, Tierney moved to third and Lamberti advanced to second on the throw. Danford plated another run with a single to right that scored Tierney for a 2-0 lead. The final run of the inning came when Kyle Danford got caught in a rundown that allowed Lamberti to advance home from third for the 3-0 advantage.

UTSA answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to make it a 3-3 contest.

The Islanders added a run in the top of the third as Eric Weiss walked, moved to third on a Gonzales single and scored when Porras doubled to left center to make it 4-3.

Once again the Roadrunners matched the Islanders, getting a run on two hits in the bottom of the third to make it a 4-4 contest.

Texas A&M – Corpus Christi added its final run in the top of the fifth, getting a run when Taylor singled to the pitcher, moved to second on a groundout, advanced to third on a fly out and scored when Porras came through with an RBI single up the middle to make it 5-4.

UTSA took its first lead of the contest in the bottom half of that inning, scoring three runs for a 7-5 lead after five innings. They added two in the sixth and three in the seventh for the 12-5 final.

In addition to Hoelscher and Schnuriger pitching, Tim Keller, Dalton D'Spain, Kaleb Keith, Tim Beard, Thomas Casey, Franco Pace and AJ Longoria also saw action on the mound.

Next up for the Islanders will be a Friday night contest against Northwestern State, with the Islanders restarting Southland Conference play with a three-game series against the Demons on April 12-14 at home. First pitch for the Friday game is set for 6 p.m. at Chapman Field.
