CORPUS CHRISTI – George Springer drove in two runs – the second on a towering blast to the left-field berm in the eighth – as Corpus Christi defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 7-3 Wednesday night in exhibition baseball at Whataburger Field.
The Hooks open their ninth season of Texas League play Thursday at 7:05 against the Springfield Cardinals. The Islanders travel to Nicholls State this weekend for a three-game Southland Conference series.
Matt Heidenreich was credited with the pitching victory after working three shutout frames as the second of four Hooks hurlers.
The Hooks posted two second-inning runs against former Calallen star Adam Hoelscher. Consecutive singles by Michael Burgess and Domingo Santana set the stage for Jonathan Meyer's sacrifice fly. One out and a stolen base later, Enrique Hernandez' single to left scored Santana.
Springer, Ben Orloff and Burgess collected RBIs as the Hooks extended their lead to 5-1 during the sixth. AJ Longoria struck Carlos Perez to begin the frame and an error by Stephens at second base enabled Austin Wates to reach. Springer had the only hit of the uprising.
Meyer opened the home seventh by singling to center and later scored on a wild pitch by Matt Danton.
Zach Taylor's one-out triple in the eighth led to the Islanders' second tally. He scored as Vaughan bounced out to short. Jonathan Gonzales' wind-aided ground-rule double to right plated plated Jacob Hubert for the night's final run.
Hooks veteran Ross Seaton takes the ball Thursday vs. Springfield. The Cardinals counter with Richard Castillo.
