Baseball Hosts Houston Baptist In Midweek Contest
The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Baseball team will host future Southland Conference member Houston Baptist in a midweek contest on Wednesday night, with the Huskies visiting Chapman Field for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
All fans without a valid Texas A&M – Corpus Christi parking pass or a disabled parking tag are required to park in the Bayside Parking Garage located on campus.
Freshman O'Shea Dumes (1-0, 1.46 ERA) will get his first collegiate start for the Islanders (13-11) against a HBU (8-12-1) team that will join the Southland Conference in all sports next season. The Huskies have started to prepare for league play by scheduling several current teams in the Southland, having already played Nicholls and Lamar, while a game against Stephen F. Austin will follow next week. It will be the first of two games between the teams this season, with the Islanders traveling to Houston on April 16.
The Huskies will start Ross Kennell (2-1, 4.56 ERA) on the mound on Wednesday night.
The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi offense that will face Kennell is led by Eric Weiss and his team-high .337 batting average, while Jonathan Gonzales is close behind at .313 on the year. Gonzales leads the team in RBI with 21, while Weiss is just two behind at 19 this season. Zach Taylor follows with a .307 batting average, and Cody Stephens rounds out the hitters above .300 with a .301 mark in 2013. Jordan Lee is just under the mark, sitting at .299 on the year.
Dumes will be making his first start while trying to earn his second win of the year after getting the win in relief against Harvard last Monday night. He holds a 1.46 ERA in eight appearances out of the bullpen and will be just the fifth pitcher to start a game for the Islanders this season.
Kennell has picked up wins over Lamar and Prairie View A&M this season, pitching a complete game against Southland member Lamar while allowing just one run on four hits and striking out seven batters.
Luke Clements leads the Huskies with a .350 batting average, while Mike Chamberlain is second at .345 and Samm Wiggins sits at .300 exactly to round out the trio hitting .300 or better. Clements also leads the team with 14 RBI, followed closely by CJ Jarvis at 13 and Curtis Jones at 12 on the year.
