Jonathan Gonzales Named Student-Athlete of the Week

CORPUS CHRISTI – Jonathan Gonzales has been named the Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by Pepsi. Gonzales earned the award after recording a career night against Texas State in the series opener on Friday.

Jonathan Gonzales tied a school record for hits in a game on Friday night, going 6-for-6 with eight RBI against Texas State as the Islanders scored the second-most runs in school history during a 23-7 win over the Bobcats in seven innings.

He started the game with two doubles and then had four straight singles to end the night. The Islanders first baseman struck out just once on the weekend against a team that had averaged 8.5 Ks per game coming into the series and finished the series with a .538 batting average.

Next up for Gonzales and the Islanders baseball team will be four more games in four days, as they travel to Houston – Victoria on Thursday for the final pre-conference game of the year, and then play a three-game series against Sam Houston State on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It will be the first Southland Conference series of the year for both teams.
