Baseball Set For Three-Game Series Against Former Southland Foe Texas State

The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Baseball team will travel to San Marcos this weekend for a three-game set against former Southland Conference member Texas State starting on Friday. The games are set for 6:30 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.

The Islanders (9-7) earned a midweek victory over the Bobcats (5-12) earlier in the year. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi is coming off of a 1-2 weekend against Houston, falling in a tight 3-1 game on Sunday in the rubber match, while Texas State went 0-5 in three games against No. 4 Oregon State and a midweek pair against No. 16 Oregon on a road trip through the Pacific Northwest.

In the single game at Chapman Field on Feb. 26, the Islanders earned a 7-3 final as Trevor Belicek picked up his first collegiate win, pitching 3.1 innings while giving up just three hits and no runs while striking out three and walking none. Belicek has since moved into the weekend rotation, earning his second win against the Houston Cougars last Saturday on the road. Trevor Foss will start against Kyle Finnegan on Friday, Belicek will go against Taylor Black on Saturday and Adam Hoelscher will get the ball against Scott Grist in the series finale on Sunday.

Zach Taylor leads the team in batting average, hitting .391 on the year coming into the series. Kyle Danford is second on the team at .351, Eric Weiss is hitting .339 and Jordan Lee rounds out the group above .300 with a .328 season batting average. Jonathan Gonzales is fifth on the list at .274, but the first baseman showed flashes of his form from last year with a two-home run game in the Islanders 9-3 win over Houston, hitting two towering shots over the left field fence for his first two of 2013.

Andrew Stumph leads Texas State with a .308 batting average, while Garrett Mattlage is hitting .294 and Tyler Pearson is at .289 as the top three hitters on the Bobcats squad.
