The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Baseball team will get a tough test in the opening game of the 2013 Kleberg Bank College Classic on Friday night, taking on New Mexico in a 6:00 p.m. game at Whataburger Field. The Islanders and the Corpus Christi Hooks work together to host the tournament each year in the Coastal Bend.
Starting for the Islanders (3-2) on Friday night is Tim Keller (1-0, 1.80 ERA) in his second outing of the year. Keller held Texas – Pan American to just one run on two hits over 5.0 innings last Saturday to give his team the victory. He will face off against A.J. Carman (0-0, 2.25 ERA) of the Lobos in the tournament opener for both teams. Carman pitched 4.0 innings while giving up just one run and one walk while striking out three against Oklahoma State in the opening series.
The Lobos were ranked as high as No. 21 coming into the season, but dropped out of the rankings after going 1-2 against the Big 12's Cowboys last weekend. They are still receiving votes in the national polls from both USA Today/ESPN and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi comes into the series hitting .298 as a team, with Brad Porras leading the way at .474 with four doubles. Porras is the younger brother of former New Mexico player Trey Porras.
Eric Weiss is second on the team with a .353 average, a double, a triple and six RBI, while Jordan Lee is hitting .316 with four doubles and Stafford Brantley rounds out the list of Islanders above .300 with a .312 batting average.
For New Mexico, Mitch Garver is tops on the team with his .462 average, and is one of four players hitting at .400 or better. The Lobos also boast two others hitting above .300 as the team is batting .314 for the year.
It will be the first meeting between the teams in Corpus Christi, with the only previous meeting coming in 2003 at the Lobos home stadium in Albuquerque. New Mexico earned three wins over the Islanders in the only meetings between the teams before Friday night.
