Roadrunners Offensive Onslaught Buries Islanders Against UTSA
The Islanders (3-2) kept it close through the first couple of innings, but the UTSA bats were red hot on the night, pounding out 19 runs on 22 hits to defeat the home team.
Tyler Schnuriger (0-2) was saddled with the loss after going 3.0 innings, giving up four runs six hits while walking two and striking out five. The Islanders used a total of seven pitchers against the Roadrunners, with each giving up at least one run, as they could not solve the UTSA hitters.
The Roadrunners got on the board first in the second inning and added three more runs on three hits, including a two-run home run by RJ Perucki to make it a 4-0 lead.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi responded in the bottom of the third inning, plating two runs on two hits to cut the lead in half. Russell Vaughan drew a one-out walk, and he was advanced to third on Jordan Lee's fourth double of the year to put runners at second and third. Cody Stephens plated the first run with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Vaughan and advance Lee to third. Brad Porras followed with an RBI single through the right side to push Lee across and make it a 4-2 game.
It was short lived however, with UTSA adding runs in in all remaining innings to blow the game open at 19-2.
The Islanders tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth, plating two runs on three hits, but UTSA quickly snuffed out the threat to end the game at 19-4. Stafford Brantley led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and came in to score on a Zach Taylor double through the left side to make it 19-3. Brad Lamberti followed with a single to right that brought Taylor around to make it a 19-4 final.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi must quickly put the loss behind them, with a game against nationally ranked New Mexico on tap Friday night.
