CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Baseball program started its annual fall world series on Thursday afternoon, with the Blue Team taking a 3-1 final over the Green Team. Game two is set for 5:30 PM on Friday evening at Chapman Field.
The Blue Team (1-0) got on the board early and held it throughout due to a strong performance by starting pitcher Tyler Schnuriger, who went 5.1 innings and gave up just three hits and no runs while striking out six and walking four. The Green Team (0-1) also got a strong performance from their starting pitcher as Adam Hoelscher went 6.0 innings while giving up three hits and one run on six strikeouts and one walk.
Offensively, the Blue Team totaled eight hits and three runs. David Tittle led the way with a 3-for-4 performance, picking up two singles and a double with an RBI. Jonathan Gonzales was 2-for-4 with an RBI while Brad Porras, Stafford Brantley and Russell Vaughan each picked up one hit in the contest.
The Blue Team got on the board first in the second inning, as Brantley reached on a hit-by-pitch, stole second and came around to score on a Tittle RBI single to make it a 1-0 game.
The score held until the top of the seventh when Porras started the inning off with a single and was followed by a Brantley walk to put runners on first and second. Porras was picked off at second base. Tittle followed with a single and advanced to second while Brantley was thrown out trying to go from first to third on the play. O'Shea Dumes came on to pinch hit and brought in a run with a hard hit ball through the left side on an error by the third baseman t make it a 2-0 lead.
The Blue Team added to the lead in the very next inning to make it a three-run advantage. Vaughan opened the inning with a single but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double for the first out. After another quick out, the Blue Team started the rally when Brandon Tierney reached on an error, advanced to second on a wild pitch and came around to score on a Gonzales single to left center for the 3-0 lead.
The Green Team mounted a rally in the bottom of the ninth, picking up a run and threatening for more before Dalton D'Spain finished off the game for a save. Davis picked up an infield single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jakob Silva walked while Davis once again advanced on a wild pitch to put runners on the corners.
That is when D'Spain came in to close it out. Silva was caught stealing for the first out, and Cody Stephens picked up an RBI groundout for out number two while Davis scored to make it 3-1. After Lee followed with his third hit of the game to try to extend the rally, D'Spain picked up a strikeout looking to end the game.
The two teams will meet again on Friday evening, with first pitch set for 5:30 PM at Chapman Field. Trevor Foss will be on the mound for the Blue Team, while Franco Pace will get the nod for the Green Team.
