With eight of the 13 Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball players in summer leagues being pitchers, it would make sense for the arms to lead the way. But for the Islanders in different leagues around the country, the performance has been beyond expectations halfway through the summer season.
In the Northwoods League, listed by some in the national media as the second-best summer league for college players behind the Cape Cod League, Trevor Foss leads the way with a league-high 43 strikeouts, followed closely by teammate Jacob Dorris at 41. Foss is a starter for the Madison Mallards, while Dorris has been used exclusively in a relief role for the La Crosse Loggers.
Trevor Belicek has the lowest ERA of all Texas A&M – Corpus Christi pitchers in any league with a mark of 1.15 in 15.2 innings for the Mankato Moondogs. Dorris sports a 2.63 ERA while Foss is at 4.26 during the summer season.
The biggest contingent of Islanders comes in the Texas Collegiate League, with three pitchers and two position players. Tanner Green, Tyler Schnuriger and Eric Weiss play for the Victoria Generals, while Franco Pace and Brad Porras are with the Brazos Valley Bombers.
Weiss is currently hitting .302 with a double, one home run, eight RBI and eight runs scored for the Generals. Green has a 2.51 ERA in 14.1 innings with 10 strikeouts, while Schnuriger is at a 3.86 ERA with 13 punch-outs in 18.2 frames.
For the Bombers, Porras is hitting .271 at the plate with three doubles, one home run, eight RBI and 10 runs scored. Pace has pitched 10 games in relief for Brazos Valley, working to a 1.64 ERA and one save after giving up just two earned runs and 16 strikeouts over 11.0 innings.
The top freshman on the team last year, Jordan Lee, has seen limited action thus far in the Valley Baseball League with the Front Royal Cardinals. Lee has started nine games, playing in 12 during the summer for the Cardinals. He is hitting .237 with three doubles, one home run and three RBI in his stint for Front Royal.
Tim Keller is 2-0 with a 5.95 ERA for the Wilmington Sharks of the Coastal Plains League, while Stafford Brantley is hitting .295 with two doubles, one home run and eight RBI in the Pacific West Baseball League for the California Glory.
The final two Islanders playing this summer are Matt Danton and Kyle Danford, with both players on the Hornell Dodgers roster in the New York Collegiate Baseball League. Danford is currently hitting .231 on the year with one home run, eight RBI and five runs scored. Danton is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in three starts, tossing 13.0 innings while striking out seven and walking just one batter.
