Islanders Unable to Keep Pace With UT Arlington Offense
SAN MARCOS, Texas – For the fifth time this season, the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team was unable to contain the UT Arlington offense as the Islanders fell by a 10-5 final against the Mavericks in the second round of the Southland Conference Baseball Tournament. The Islanders will face Sam Houston State at 9 a.m. on Friday morning as they try to keep their tournament championship hopes alive against the Bearkats.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi falls to 24-32 on the year, while UTA moves to 33-23 this season. The Islanders will face the No. 1 seeded Sam Houston State Bearkats for the second time this tournament, with Texas A&M – Corpus Christi taking a 9-2 final in the opening game of the tournament.
Trevor Foss got the start for the Islanders, but was unable to find a rhythm, giving up six runs, only three of them earned, on four hits in 3.1 innings. He issued three walks while striking out two batters. On the day, six of the 10 runs by UTA were earned, as the Islanders had five errors in the game.
In the first inning, Jordan Lee started it off with a walk, and moved to second on a single by Jonathan Gonzales. After a Brad Porras walk loaded the bases, Weston Montgomery hit a sacrifice fly to left center to make it 1-0 in favor of the Islanders.
In the top of the third, UTA got three runs on no hits as a pair of walks and an error helped the Mavs take a 3-1 lead.
The Islanders added a run in the bottom half of the inning, as Gonzales hit a solo home run over the left field wall to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Mavs added four more runs in the top of the very next inning, with the big hit coming on a two-run homer from Greg McCall to make it a 7-2 game.
Eric Weiss cut into the lead with a solo shot to left center in the bottom of the fourth, making it a 7-3 score after four complete.
UTA scored for the third straight inning with a single run in the top of the fifth inning to make it an 8-3 score, as McCall had an RBI double put the lead back at five runs.
After holding the Mavs scoreless in the top of the sixth inning, UTA got back on the board in the seventh, scoring a run on a sacrifice fly to make it a 9-3 score.
The Islanders cut into the lead in the bottom of the eighth, scoring a pair of runs to make it a 9-5 game. Lee started the inning off with a home run off the very top of the video board in right field to make it a 9-4 game. Gonzales followed by reaching on an error, but was eliminated on a fielder's choice by Porras. Montgomery put runners on first and second with a single, and Weiss followed with an RBI single to left center to make it 9-5.
In the top of the ninth, the Mavericks added another unearned run as the Islanders committed their fourth and fifth errors of the game. The run made it 10-5 in favor of UTA heading to the bottom of the ninth.
The Islanders went down in order to finish the game, sending them to a 9 a.m. contest against Sam Houston State on Friday.
