Islanders Come Up Short Against UT Arlington in Series Opener

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team scored first, but was unable to keep pace with the UT Arlington Mavericks on Thursday night, losing 8-2 in the opener of the final Southland Conference series of the year.

The Islanders fall to 23-29 on the season, and now have a 14-17 record in Southland Conference play. The Mavericks are now 30-23 this year, 17-14 in league games. With Northwestern State winning, the Islanders are now in a three-way tie for seventh place in the Southland.

Daniel Minor started for the Islanders and took the loss to fall to 9-3 on the year. He pitched 5.0 innings and gave up five runs on eight hits while striking out three and walking none.

In the first inning, Jordan Lee led things off by reaching on an error by the second baseman, and was followed by Drew Vest reaching on an error by the third baseman. After a Jonathan Gonzales fly out moved Lee to third base, an Eric Weiss ground out scored Lee from third for an early 1-0 lead.

Things looked good for the Islanders early, as Minor struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 bottom of the first, but he ran into trouble during the second inning. In that frame, UTA scored three runs on five hits to gain a 3-1 lead.

They added a run in the bottom of the third to make it a 4-1 lead, but Texas A&M – Corpus Christi responded with a run of their own in the top of the fourth.

In that inning, Weston Montgomery doubled to left, and came around to score on a Jeramie Marek single to make it a 4-2 game.

It would be all they could muster, with the Mavs scoring one in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to make it an 8-2 final score.

Game two of the series will be a 6:30 p.m. first pitch at Clay Gould Ballpark on Friday night. The Mavs will have their Senior Day ceremony before the game, opting to do it at night instead of before the series finale at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
