Texas A&M – Corpus Christi junior right-handed pitcher Daniel Minor has been named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season. Minor earned the honor after pitching his second complete game of the year, striking out 10 batters and allowing no walks while surrendering just one run against Nicholls on Sunday to stop a four-game skid.
The native of Dripping Springs, Texas has been a dominant force for the Islanders this year, notching a 5-1 pitching record while also leading the Southland Conference with 57 K's, good enough to place him in the Top 10 nationally for total strikeouts. He lowered his season ERA to 1.25 on the year after the performance, and has a 0.86 ERA in Southland Conference games.
"He has been a big-time guy on the mound, and has provided that for us all year," said head coach Scott Malone. "If we are going to reach the goals we set, including playing in post season, he is going to have to continue to do that and be that guy for us."
With the Islanders facing a possible sweep on Sunday afternoon at Nicholls, Minor put up another performance that has been common this season, pitching 9.0 innings and giving up just three hits and one run, while striking out 10 batters. It was the third time this season that the pitcher has compiled 10-or- more strikeouts, setting a career high with 14 against UTSA, and following that up the next week with 10 more against Southeastern Louisiana to earn the win. After a rough start against Central Arkansas, Minor returned to his usual self against Nicholls.
"I think what he has done for us is not just the nine innings he is out there on the mound," said Malone. "But now since he is consistently so good, when we get on the bus and go, we know there is a great chance to win when he is in the starting lineup.
"It turns into a mindset that, instead of hoping to win, we feel the odds are in our favor."
Minor was also named the Southland Pitcher of the Week following the second week of the season, and was named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week following his 14-strikeout, complete-game shutout performance against UTSA.
Islanders will be back in action starting Thursday against Texas State, as the two teams will play on Thursday, Friday and Saturday due to the Easter Holiday on Sunday. When they do, Minor will likely occupy his normal third spot in the rotation against the Bobcats.
