Colonels Take Series with 6-1 Win Over Islanders

THIBODAUX, La. – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team was unable to find its offensive stroke at the plate, falling 6-1 against Nicholls in the Southland Conference contest. The Colonels picked up a complete game from their starter for the second time in as many games as the Islanders were unable to get into the bullpen on Saturday.

The Islanders are now 11-16 on the year, 4-7 in Southland Conference games. Nicholls improves to 16-11 this season, 6-5 in league play. Adam Hoelscher was tagged with the loss for the Islanders, giving up four runs on seven hits in 7.0 innings. The junior lefty walked none while striking out five batters. Tim Keller pitched in relief, giving up two unearned runs on two hits in his only inning of work. He also walked one and struck out one in his relief appearance.

Jonathan Gonzales had three of the Islanders hits, going 3-for-4 on the day, while Eric Weiss added a pair of singles. Kyle Danford, Brad Porras and Dan Sciantarelli each had one hit, with a double from Sciantarelli being the only extra-base hit of the day for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.

After a scoreless first inning, Nicholls plated a pair of runs on just two pitched into the second inning, as the leadoff hitter singled on the first pitch, and Blake Bergeron followed for the Colonels with a home run to left field on the first pitch to make it a 2-0 score. Nicholls plated another pair of runs in the fourth inning to take an early 4-0 lead.

Texas A&M – Corpus Christi threatened in the second, fourth and fifth inning, getting runners in scoring position each time, including to third base in both the second and fifth innings, but were unable to get a run home.

The Islanders finally got on the board in the seventh inning, using a leadoff double by Dan Sciantarelli to end the shutout. After the double, Santiago Ruiz moved Sciantarelli to third on a ground out, while Jeramie Marek brought him home on another grounder to make it a 4-1 game.

It would be all they could muster on the day though, as the Colonels added two more runs in the eighth inning to make it a 6-1 lead that would be the final score.

The final game of the series will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, and will feature Islanders pitcher Daniel Minor on the mound, facing off against Mike Wisecarver of Nicholls.
