Islanders Unable to Solve UCA Starter in 9-3 Loss

CONWAY, Ark. – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team could not withstand a rally in the late innings by Central Arkansas, falling 9-3 against the Bears to split the first two games of the Southland Conference series. The two teams will conclude the series with a 12 p.m. contest on Sunday at Bear Stadium.

The Islanders move to 11-13 on the season, and sit at 4-4 in Southland Conference play. The Bears picked improved to 9-10 overall, 4-4 in league games. Starter Tim Keller was tagged with the loss to fall to 0-4 on the year, pitching 4.1 innings while giving up four runs on four hits, while striking out seven batters and walking five.

Jonathan Gonzales picked up his third home run of the year, but it was not enough as the Islanders managed six hits and scored in just one inning against UCA starter Caleb McClanahan. The Bears ace pitched a complete game, giving up three runs on six hits, walking none and striking out 11 Islanders batters.

Central Arkansas got on the board first, notching single runs in the third and fourth innings for an early 2-0 lead, but the Islanders quickly responded in the fifth for their first lead of the day.

Gonzales started things off with a leadoff home run in the inning. After the homer, Jordan Lee singled to right field to put a runner on for Marc Damon. With the count 1-1, Damon laced a single to right center field and advanced to second on an error by the right fielder that allowed Lee to score all the way from first to tie the game at 2-2.

Dan Sciantarelli advanced Damon to third on a ground out, and Santiago Ruiz plated him with another ground out to make it a 3-2 score in favor of the Islanders.

The lead was short-lived however, as the Bears responded with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth to make it a 4-3 lead for UCA.

Central Arkansas added one run in the seventh and four in the eighth to finish the scoring at 9-3 in favor of the Bears.

The two teams will finish off play on Sunday, with Daniel Minor throwing against Ryan Angus of UCA in the rubber game of the three-game Southland Conference series.
