Texas A&M – Corpus Christi pitcher Daniel Minor was one of four players to receive Collegiate Baseball Newspaper "Louisville Slugger's" National Players of the Week recognition on Monday following his career-high 14 strikeouts of UTSA batters in a complete-game shutout.
Minor pitched 9.0 innings against UTSA on Sunday, dominating the Roadrunner hitters at the plate and accounting for over half of the UTSA outs via the strikeout. He also gave up just four hits, and never more than one in any inning, while allowing no hits and his only walk over the last four innings.
"On a pitching first team, the expectations are for those guys to give us a chance to win," said head coach Scott Malone. "So far, for the most part, not only has Daniel, but our entire rotation has done that consistently.
"Outings like we had yesterday, you hope in the big picture that others on the staff keep feeding off each other and this season continues to be something special where we finish in one of top spots in league."
The junior from Dripping Springs lowered his season ERA to 1.29 while moving his record to 3-1 on the year. In his five appearances this year, Minor has struck out 33 batters total, and is averaging 10.61 K's per nine innings. He has allowed just four earned runs in 28.0 innings, including zero earned runs in three of his appearances and only one in a fourth.
"I'm really proud for Daniel to get recognition," said Malone. "If you ask anybody in the Southland, UTSA is going to be one of the more talented offensive teams in the league.
"To do it against that strong of a lineup really says a lot about what he accomplished. We only put up one run, so we needed all nine zeros. Also really happy for the light that shines on our program nationally."
The Islanders will be back in action this coming weekend against Southeastern Louisiana at Chapman Field. Games are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and a 1 p.m. start in the finale on Sunday.
