Islanders Fall 7-1 Against Hot-Hitting Nebraska

CORPUS CHRISITI, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team was unable to handle the red-hot Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday night, falling 7-1 in the fifth game of the Kleberg Bank College Classic at Whataburger Field. The Islanders will face Utah in the finale on Sunday with a 3 p.m. first pitch.

The Islanders fall to 5-2 on the year, while Nebraska evens its record to 3-3 on the season. Starter Tim Keller was tagged with the loss to move to 0-1, pitching 5.0 innings while giving up four runs.

The Islanders threatened in the opening inning, loading the bases with just one out, but a popup and a strikeout looking ended the Islanders chances for the early lead.

Nebraska made the best of their opportunities in the second inning, scoring three runs on four hits, along with a passed ball and a pair of wild pitches by the Islanders for a 3-0 lead early on.

The Huskers added to the lead in the fifth, scoring a single run on back-to-back hits to extend the lead to 4-0 over Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.

Nebraska picked up three more runs in a sloppy seventh inning that saw three Islanders errors to allow the runs to score unearned.

Texas A&M – Corpus Christi pushed across a run in the eighth inning, scoring on a Bobby Buckner single to make it a 7-1 game. Jeramie Marek started the threat with a single to the shortstop, and advanced to second on an Eric Weiss hit to left field. Buckner followed with a singled through the right side of the infield to plate Marek and make it 7-1.

It would be all they could muster, however, as they fell by a 7-1 final.

Junior Daniel Minor will get the start for the Islanders against Utah as they look to bounce back from the loss. Game time is set for a 3 p.m. start.
