Navy Takes Game One of Fall World Series, 3-2

CORPUS CHRISTI – Marc Damon's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning proved the difference in a 3-2 victory for the Navy squad in the opening game of the Navy/White World Series on Friday at Chapman Field. Damon went 2-for-4 in the game. Bobby Buckner had two hits and a steal in the loss. 

Trevor Foss collected the win for the Navy squad after allowing one hit and one run in two innings of work. Philly Garcia closed out the game for the save, allowing only a looping double in his inning.

The White got on the board first with an RBI groundout in the top of the third to make it 1-0. Buckner delivered the run with a grounder to first to give the visitors an early lead. 

Navy responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to wrestle the advantage away. Omar Garcia brought the first run home with an RBI groundout, then Santiago Ruiz sliced an RBI single into right center to make it a 2-1 score.

White countered with a run in the top of the sixth to tie the game again. With two down, Weston Montgomery ripped an RBI triple to deep right center to plate the tying run. 

In the bottom of the sixth, Damon gave the Navy a lead it would not relinquish. With two away and Stafford Brantley on second, the senior laced a single through the left side for an RBI that gave the home team a 3-2 lead. From there on, the bullpen held on to finish off the victory, with Garcia getting the save with a scoreless ninth.

The two teams will play Game Two of the series on Saturday at 11 a.m., with Game Three set for Sunday at noon at Chapman Field.
