Ian Campbell Wins Professional Debut on Same Day He Signs

Former Islanders pitcher Ian Campbell had quite a day this past weekend. The Southern Illinois Miners signed the 6-5 righty to a professional contract on Saturday morning and gave him his first start later that evening.

Campbell responded well, tossing six innings and giving up just three runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking none.

"Going into it they wanted me to throw a bullpen on Thursday and make a start on Saturday," said Campbell. "When they told me that, it kind of shocked me a little because I hadn't really thrown a ball off a mound in 10 days.

"They sent me out against professional hitters that have played affiliated baseball, so I had to bear down and do what I do, just throw my pitches and hit my spots."

The debut turned out successful for everyone involved; the Miners won their fifth-straight game that day and Campbell earned himself a spot in the starting rotation.

"I'm pretty sure I'm going to have the chance to be a regular starter, I'm actually starting today as well," said Campbell. "I'm pretty excited to be playing a really good team tonight. It should be a lot of fun, and I am looking forward to it."

Campbell will get the start against the River City Rascals on Thursday night, looking to pick up his second win of the year. Fans can follow the action by going to the Rascals website at www.RiverCityRascals.com.
