Top Moment #2: Baseball Beats Texas
On Feb. 22, the undefeated Islanders baseball team faced a stiff test with its first road game of the season against No. 6 Texas in a non-conference showdown. The Islanders' powerful bats and a balanced performance on the mound led the team to its second all-time victory over UT in school history, 8-7.
Riding a perfect 4-0 record after a four-game sweep of Mississippi Valley State, the Islanders opened the first inning with two runs. Drew Vest was first on the scoreboard with on Trey Hernandez' RBI groundout to third. The Islanders were at a 2-0 advantage after Jumpy Garcia delivered a single through the middle to plate Chris Vergne. The Islanders then pushed it to 3-0 in the second, as Vergne brought in a run on a 6-4-3 double play, with Logan Nottebrok scoring for a three-run advantage.
On the other side, Justin Meza was rolling, surrendering two walks and a hit batsman, but striking out four in the first two innings. The Moody product punched out the side in the second.
The offense continued in the third, and again it started with the Islanders getting the leadoff man on. Matt Holland, hit by a pitch to advance to first, stole second and advanced to third on Jacob Perales' infield single. Garcia then got his second RBI of the game with a bounding ball to third that plated Holland for a 4-0 lead.
After the Longhorns scored twice in the bottom of the third, Garcia came through again in the fifth, knocking in a pair of Islanders on a two-run single advancing the team to a 6-2 advantage. In the bottom of the sixth with Holland on base, Perales ripped an RBI single to right to tack on another run, now 7-2 in favor of the visitors.
Although Meza's control issues got to him in the bottom of the fifth and three runs came in for UT, making it 7-5, Vest drove in a run in the top of the seventh to make it 8-5 in favor of the visitors. His two-out single plated Nottebrok to regain a three-run edge.
After the Longhorns scored twice in the seventh, Michael Boyle came on and got a 5-4-3 double play to thwart the threat with the Islanders now clinging to the slimmest of leads. Boyle gave his teammates a scare in the bottom of the eighth, walking the bases loaded, but retired the side on a lineout to left center to keep the Islanders up 8-7 headed to the ninth.
After Texas A&M - Corpus Christi went in order in the top of the frame, the Islanders called on opening-day starter Todd Simko to finish the job. The Cuesta College transfer punched out Erich Weiss, then got Johnathan Walsh to bounce out to shortstop. After the Islanders committed a two-base error, Simko got a popout to left off the bat of Tant Shepherd to end the game.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi went on to win 37 games, a program record, and tallied victories over such national programs as Oregon State and Texas Tech. But it was the win over Texas that got the Islanders going in what was to be the finest year in the program's 12 years of existence.
