Record 84 Islanders Named to Southland Commissioner's Honor Roll

CORPUS CHRISTI – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi placed 84 student-athletes on the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll during the spring semester, the league announced today. It marked an all-time high for the Islanders, who saw 18 student-athletes earn a perfect 4.0 GPA in their spring competitive seasons.

“The improvements we have made in the classroom in 2013-14 have been impressive,” Director of Athletics Scott Lazenby said. “I’m really proud of the efforts made by our student-athletes, coaches and staff to continue to strive to live by the Islanders Way, and academic success is a big part of that. This is a great accomplishment for Islanders Athletics.”

The 84 selections eclipsed the previous high of 73, set in the spring of 2012, by a wide margin, while the 18 perfect GPAs were also a school record. The honor roll includes student-athletes who took part in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field and earned a 3.0 GPA during the spring semester.

Shawn Flanagan’s track and field squads led the way for the Islanders, with the women seeing 19 students recognized and the men collecting 17 honors. Among those 36 selections, 10 student-athletes posted a 4.0 – Philipp Baar, David Carrillo, Jackson Davis, Edgar Martinez, Daniel Rhodes and Valentinas Rudys on the men’s side, Melina Ortiz, Luisa Pasold, Shelby Polasek and Shanice Prendergast for the women.

The Islanders baseball team saw 15 student-athletes honored by the league, led by First Team Academic All-American Russell Vaughan. Vaughan, who posted the top GPA on Scott Malone’s squad, was one of three seniors to make the honor roll, as he was joined by Corpus Christi native A.J. Longoria and Cody Stephens.

More than half the Islanders’ men’s basketball roster collected honor roll laurels, as eight members of Willis Wilson’s squad collected a 3.0 GPA or better, the highest in the coach’s tenure at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Senior Kevin Lynch was the lone player for the team to register a 4.0, while fellow graduated senior James King was also recognized by the league. Royce Chadwick’s women’s team saw five players named to the honor roll, with Taryn Gregory and Lexy Harris each earning a perfect 4.0.

Steve Moore’s tennis teams each had five players recognized by the league, with Ashley Garza and Cassie Shaw each leading the way with a 4.0. Southland Men’s Tennis Player of the Year Peter Nagy held the top GPA among the five Islanders honored on his squad. Senior Krista Fenniak was the lone Islanders golf player to be named to the honor roll.

Three members of Stephanie Hughes’ softball squad carded a perfect 4.0 during their competitive season, with All-Southland selection Valerie Perez, freshman pitcher player Liz Carter and Mackinzee Griebel topping the team’s honor roll list. The trio was among nine players on the squad to gain recognition on the honor roll.

The Southland Conference Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll acknowledges participants in all sports sponsored by the league and its member institutions. The honor roll is released within 30 days at the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters, recognizing student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.00 GPA. Student-athletes, nominated by their respective academic advisors, must have been eligible to compete in a conference sport during the academic year in which the nomination occurs.
