Islanders Athletics to Induct Three Into Hall of Honor

CORPUS CHRISTI –
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Department of Athletics will enshrine three former student-athletes into its Hall of Honor on Friday, Feb. 28. Johnny Cloud (boxing, 1956-59), Trey Hearne (baseball, 2004-05) and Bob Maroney (basketball/football coach, 1961-65; administrator, 1999-2007) bring the total number of Hall of Honor members to 28.

“These three inductees bridge several eras of our university across a wide variety of sports,” Director of Athletics Scott Lazenby said. “All three of them are very deserving of a spot in our Hall of Honor.”

Cloud came to the University of Corpus Christi in the fall of 1956 as a sophomore, and helped lead the Tarpon boxing team to a 62-16 record in the 1956-57 season. As a junior in 1957-58, be made his greatest impact, winning the Regional Lightweight Championship and leading the squad to a 66-16 record. He misses most of his senior year to an injury, compiling a career record of 150-10.

Hearne played two years for the Islanders, and was a standout on the mound in both seasons. In particular, his senior campaign was one of the best in school history, as he set single-season records for A&M-Corpus Christi with his 116 strikeouts and 2.00 ERA. His 201 career strikeouts are also the second-best mark in Islanders lore. He went on to be drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals, and enjoyed a solid minor-league career until his retirement following the 2010 season.

Maroney arrived at the Island University in 1961 to take the reins as an assistant basketball coach for the Tarpons under fellow Hall of Honor inductee Jess Richardson. He went on to serve as head coach of the Tarpons from 1962-64, and also served as an assistant football coach for the 1963 season. He remained with the University on the faculty, and later was a key player in bringing athletics back to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, serving on the selection committee for the advisory committee in hiring Director of Athletics. He also served as the chair of the Intercollegiate Athletics Council and served as the department’s Faculty Athletics Representative.

The honorees will be recognized at the inaugural Homecoming Honors Banquet on Friday, Feb. 28, from 6-9 p.m. in the Lone Star Ballroom of the University Center. Islander Alumni Award winners and Hall of Honor inductees will both be recognized at the ceremony. For tickets, please call the Islander Alumni Office at 361-825-5787.
