CORPUS CHRISTI – The student-athletes at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi had a tremendous fall semester in the classroom. The nearly 250 Islanders had a collective GPA of 2.97 and possessed a cumulative GPA of 2.95 through Fall 2013.
“While intercollegiate athletics is often graded based on wins and losses from an external point of view, the true mission of our intercollegiate athletics department is to see our student-athletes achieve success in the classroom and live successful lives after they graduate from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi,” Director of Athletics Scott Lazenby said. “The results from the fall semester are outstanding and I’m so proud of our student-athletes, coaches and staff that have worked so hard for this achievement.”
The Islanders saw 21 student-athletes post a perfect 4.0 GPA, and a total of 139 garnered a GPA of 3.0 or better. That number represents 59 percent of the Islanders student-athlete population.
“To have more than half of our student-athletes find themselves on the honor roll in the fall semester is so impressive,” Lazenby said. “Within every athletics department, there are always strong student-athletes, but to have this level of success across the board shows commitment to the Islanders Way from both our student-athletes and those who help them thrive in the classroom.”
Seven of the 13 teams (indoor and outdoor track are counted together in this situation) posted GPAs over 3.0, with another three above 2.90. Women’s tennis topped the list with a 3.38 GPA as a unit, while women’s golf was just behind with a 3.28. The women’s soccer team, in its first semester of existence, posted a 3.20 GPA, a particularly impressive accomplishment during its playing season.
Eighteen women’s soccer players led a list of 46 student-athletes named to the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the fall semester. Only those student-athletes competing in soccer, cross country and volleyball were eligible for the award.
