CORPUS CHRISTI – Former San Antonio Spurs great and NBA Head Coach Avery Johnson will be the featured speaker at the 2013 Islander Athletic Fund Golf Tournament Dinner and Auction. The event will take place on the evening of Thursday, April 11, at the Omni Hotel.
Individual tickets for the dinner/auction are available for $50, with a table of 10 available for $450. The dinner will be accompanied by a silent auction featuring dozens of items up for bid. The evening begins at 6 p.m. in the Nueces Ballroom of the Omni Hotel. The event is presented by Facility Solutions Group.
Johnson helped lead the Spurs to the 1999 NBA Championship as the team’s point guard. The Spurs retired his number in 2007 and he was inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. He went on to serve as a head coach in the NBA for both the Dallas Mavericks and Brooklyn Nets.
In his college years at Southern, he totaled 732 assists in just 61 games, and set an NCAA record by averaging 13.3 assists per game in his senior season. He also holds the NCAA single game record with 22 assists, and is the only player in NCAA Division I history to have 20-plus assists in a game more than once, doing so four times during his two years at Southern.
