Islanders Place 71 Student-Athletes on Commissioner’s Honor Roll

OFFICIAL SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE RELEASE

FRISCO, Texas – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi athletic department continued its academic success, placing 71 student-athletes on the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the semester, the league announced Tuesday. Included in that total were 10 Islanders who earned a 4.0 GPA during the spring.

With 71 student-athletes on the list, it marked the second consecutive year the Islanders have placed at least 70 on the list and have now had at least 60 student-athletes recognized in each of the last five years.

"The continued success of our student-athletes is a big component of what we do in college athletics," Director of Athletics Scott Lazenby said. "Our most important job here is to ensure our student-athletes get a quality education while competing as Islanders."

The list is comprised of student-athletes that compete in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s track and field.

Baseball and women’s track and field had the biggest representation of an Islanders team, with 15 student-athletes each on the list. Eleven of the 15 baseball players on the list earned above a 3.0, with Tim Beard, Stafford Brantley, Thomas Casey, Franco Pace and Russell Vaughan having a perfect 4.0 GPA during the semester. Thirteen of the 15 women’s track and field student-athletes on the list earned above a 3.0, with Kayla Fischer, Micah Nolan and Shanice Prendergast having perfect 4.0 GPAs during the semester. There were two other 4.0 GPAs on the list with women’s tennis (Cassie Shaw) and softball (Bethany Slick) each having a student-athlete with a perfect grade-point average.

In addition to the 15 from the baseball team and women’s track and field team, there were nine from men’s track and field, eight from women’s basketball, seven from softball, six from men’s basketball, four from each of the men’s and women’s tennis teams and three from women’s golf.

"The job that the Center for Athletic Academic Services has done to continue the improvement of our students in the classroom is commendable,” Lazenby added. “It takes an entire team effort by the students, the coaches and the administrators to sustain our academic achievements."

The Southland Conference Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll acknowledges participants in all sports sponsored by the league and its member institutions. The honor roll is released within 30 days of the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters, recognizing student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.00 GPA. Student-athletes, nominated by their respective academic advisors, must have been eligible to compete in a conference sport during the academic year in which the nomination occurs.
