Aholelei Earns SLC Pitcher of the Week Honor

| By:
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A week after posting her fifth shutout of the season and her 11th and 12th complete games of the season, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi pitcher Primrose Aholelei was honored with the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week award.

This is her first SLC Pitcher of the Week award of the season and the third of her career. She was the only Islander to win a Player of the Week award last season, which she did twice. She joins Taneice Tyson as award winners in 2024. Tyson was named SLC Hitter of Week on March 11.

Aholelei won two games this past week for the second consecutive conference series and third overall. She beat Houston Christian in Game 1 of the series with a two-hit shutout, 7-0, then won Game 3 by allowing two runs on just three hits – one of which was a two-run home run – in a 3-2 victory. She struck out 16 batters combined in the two games, raising her season total to 142, which is the second most in the country.

Aholelei allowed just one runner to reach third base in Game 1, then she allowed four to reach third in Game 3, but three of those all came in the same inning in which the Huskies scored their only runs off the A&M-Corpus Christi ace.

"Beyond proud of Prim being voted pitcher of the week," A&M-Corpus Christi coach Kathleen Rodriguez said. "That is a huge honor to be chosen by our conference coaches and SID's, especially considering the athletes included as well as the numbers they put up this week during their competitions."

Aholelei, the reigning SLC Pitcher and Newcomer of the Year, currently leads the conference in wins (13), strikeouts (142) – which is 52 more than second place – strikeouts looking (38) and innings pitched (115). She's also third in batting average against (.192), fifth in saves (1) and eighth in ERA (2.25).

The senior from Hawaii, in just her second year as an Islander, currently is tied for third all-time in school history in wins (32), eighth in games started (47), third in career ERA (1.98), third in strikeouts (328) and eighth in innings pitched (318).

The Islanders (19-11 overall, 7-5 in the SLC) are coming off their second consecutive series victory and third in four tries. They currently are in a tie for fifth in the conference with UIW.

Up Next: The Islanders will continue Southland Conference play with a three-game series at home against Southeastern, La. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at noon Friday, followed by a single game at noon Saturday.
