A&M-Corpus Christi Closes Day One of Robert Platt Invitational Strong

HOUSTON, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track & field team closed out the first day of the Robert Platt Invitational, hosted by the University of Houston.

It was a day that didn't start until late afternoon for the Islanders who still found success to round out the first day of the meet.

It included a strong finish with the men's 3000m run where Dennis Kipngeno and Enock Kimutai finished in the top-five with times that broke into the program's top-10 record for the event. Kipngeno placed second overall in the event with an 8:20.64 time, ranking fourth all-time in the program. It is also the best time among all Southland athletes so far this year.

Kimutai crossed the finish line at 8:24.60 for his personal best in the event, improving by 0.23s. It placed him fifth in the event today, fifth among Southland athletes, and sixth in the program record book.

A&M-Corpus Christi had another slew of top-10 program records, with Capri Wilson placing sixth all-time in the 60m dash after turning in a 7.75s time. It was familiar territory for Wilson, as her personal record of a 7.63s, set at the 2022 SLC Indoor Championships, had her in the program's record book at fifth.

In just his second ever collegiate meet, freshman Damacio Hooks saw his name etched into the program record book yet again. After he jumped the program's fifth-best triple jump (14.60m) in the season opening meet, Hooks recorded a 14.33m jump today in the event to come in at sixth all-time in the program.

It all came after the day started strong with the women's distance medley that consisted of Kate Brockman, Erial Fontenot, Riley Cowan, and Chloe Garcia Grafing. The group finished third overall with a 12:29.00 time, which ranks 32nd in the NCAA for the 2024 season.

The Islanders will close out the weekend tomorrow, with field events beginning at 11 a.m. and the running events starting at 1:30 p.m.
