NEW ORLEANS – Soggy conditions and multiple rain delays plagued the first day of the 2017 Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship on Friday. The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track & field program sent six athletes into competition on the first day at Tad Gormley Stadium.
Hannah McWilliams, the Islanders school record holder in the pole vault, came into the conference meet seeded fourth. After going through preparations on a pair of occasions, officials elected to move the event back to 5 p.m. tomorrow evening.
Liz Romo participated in the only running event during the opening day for Corpus Christi. The native of Del Rio, Texas, battled in the 10,000-meter run, which was delayed by nearly two hours due to showers. Romo kept pace with the lead pack for much of the race, before finishing in 10th with a time of 38:29.94.
The men's throwing trio of
Ben Clark,
Aaron Rosales and
Nick Vasquez opened their weekend slate in the discus. Competing in slick conditions before the rain delay, Clark led the way for the hurlers with an effort of 38.99 meters (127' 11") for 15th, while Vasquez (38.7 meters, 127') and Rosales (38.3 meters, 124' 09), placed 17th and 18th, respectively.

Vinnie Van Puyvelde and
Dominic Baptiste for the men. Ranked fourth in the 200-meter dash,
