CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In addition to a staggering performance in the 3,000-meter and mile runs on the first day of the Dunamis Sports Group College Classic on Thursday night, the distance runners of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's track & field team received recognition for their work off the track and in the classroom last fall.
The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named the Islanders Men's Cross Country team NCAA Division I Cross Country All-Academic.
The Islanders men finished the first semester of 2016-17 academic year with a team GPA of 3.13. A&M-Corpus Christi was one of 189 men's programs to receive the honor. The Blue and Green join Houston Baptist, Sam Houston State and Lamar as representatives of the Southland Conference.
In order to be eligible for the USTFCCCA selection, a team must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 for the semester of competition. The 3.13 team GPA earned the Islanders the national recognition for the second straight season.
During the season, the men placed in the top-five on five occasions, including wins at the Islanders Splash and the Incarnate Word Invitational. The Islanders recorded a perfect score against UTRGV in the first South Texas Showdown presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
Cesar Gonzalez was named Southland Conference Runner of the Week after taking individual honors at the Splash.
Now competing in the distance events for Islanders Track & Field, the men posted one of the best all-around days of the indoor season at the Dunamis Sports Group College Classic on Thursday. Gonzalez and
Marek Spriestersbach scored for the Blue and Green in the 3,000-meter run, while
Steven Galli crossed the line in third in the mile run.
