OUR MISSION
More than 200 student-athletes benefit directly from your generous
investment. Your gift will be directly applied toward the
athlete’s tuition, room and board expenses, academic fees and
textbooks. Your membership provides Islander athletics the
resources to complete our mission of recruiting, educating,
developing and graduating student-athletes within an environment
that pursues excellence, values integrity and ethical conduct,
promotes respect for all individuals, teaches sportsmanship,
entertains our fans and emphasizes championship performance.
OUR HISTORY
The Intercollegiate Athletic Department’s annual giving
program, formerly known as the Tarpon Foundation, is now the
Islander Athletic Fund. Financial support from alumni, corporate
partners and local fans is vital to the success of our program. Our
$10,000 giving level has been renamed “Tarpon Club” in
an effort to recognize the history of collegiate athletics on Ward
Island.
OUR COMMITMENT TO ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
While the Islander athletic program has developed a reputation for
athletic excellence on the field, the athletes’ performance
in the classroom has been just as bright.
• Nearly half of our Islander student-athletes carry a 3.0 or better grade point average and every semester close to 20 percent achieve a 4.0.
• Graduation rates of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi student-athletes meet or exceed the graduation rates of many other NCAA Division I universities.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Student-athletes at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi take
pride in their community involvement. Volunteering is an important
part of the athlete’s growth and education. Islander athletes
can be seen throughout the community at events such as:
• YWCA’s Reading Rally
• Food Bank Share Your Christmas
• Elementary Reading National Literacy Month
• Alternate Halloween First Baptist Church
• Driscoll Children’s Hospital Volunteer Work
• Dancing Through Downtown (American Diabetes
Association)
• Conquer The Coast
• Corpus Christi Triathlon
The intercollegiate athletic program has several partnerships in the community that would not be possible without NCAA Division I athletics program at A&M-Corpus Christi. The National Youth Sports Programs (NYSP) is a partnership with Port Industries which provides a six-week summer program for youth from underprivileged school districts. The Athletic Department, with the assistance of the Coastal Bend Community Foundation, sponsors summer basketball clinics at both the Boys and Girls Club and Ben Garza Gym.
Additionally, most of the athletic programs conduct summer
camps, which is an excellent opportunity for the youth of South
Texas to receive instruction from college coaches as well as from
Islander student-athletes.
