Dr. Donald Deis began his tenure as the Islanders’ Faculty Athletic Representative in August 2012.
In his role, he serves as chair of the Islanders Athletic Council and represents Texas A&M – Corpus Christi and its faculty in the school’s relationship with the NCAA. He also serves as a liaison between the university’s faculty and staff and the student-athletes and Islanders staff. Appointed by President Dr. Flavius Killebrew, he will serve a two-year renewable term.
Raised in Corpus Christi, Deis earned his bachelor’s (BA ’75) and master’s degrees (MBA ’77) from the Island University. He earned his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University and is both a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Fraud Examiner. He returned to his alma mater in 2004 in the accounting department, becoming the inaugural Ennis and Virginia Joslin Endowed Chair in Accounting and is department chair over accounting, finance and business law. Before returning to Corpus Christi, Deis held the Joseph A. Silvoso Distinguished Director of the School of Accountancy at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Prior to that, he was on the faculty at LSU for 14 years where he also served as the director of the doctoral program in accounting.
The recipient of the 2010 Outstanding Alumni Award, he and his wife, Kathy, have contributed significant time and money to their school, establishing scholarship funds in both the accounting and nursing departments. They also served as co-chairs of the faculty/staff branch of the Momentum Capital Campaign. Kathy is a clinical assistant professor in TAMUCC’s College of Nursing. Kathy and Don are avid sports fans, having been season ticket holders of the Houston Oilers, New Orleans Saints, LSU Football, LSU Basketball (men’s and women’s), LSU Baseball, and Islanders Men’s Basketball.
Don played several sports in high school and in college. For several years, he was a volunteer assistant basketball coach in Louisiana for middle and high school boys’ teams. He has also been a volunteer walking scorer in PGA events for many years. Their son, Scott, is an LSU graduate and was a member of the LSU Men’s Basketball Team and a Louisiana state high school all-star. Both Kathy and Don view athletics as an important part of the college experience for all students, staff, faculty, and alums.
