Arte Culver was hired in 2013 as the department’s Scholastic Coordinator for Men’s Basketball. In his duties, Culver oversees all academic aspects of men’s basketball program in conjunction with the Center for Athletic Academic Services.
Culver comes to the Island University after spending last year at The Kinkaid School as an assistant basketball coach, where he helped coach the team to two top-three finishes in the Southwest Prep Conference. He was also the head coach of several Kinkaid JV and middle school teams and was a math teacher at Kinkaid, teaching Algebra II, Geometry and Calculus.
Before coming to The Kinkaid School, Culver spent a year as the head varsity basketball coach at Rosehill Christian School, a private high school in Houston. He also spent a year teaching Algebra and Geometry classes at Rosehill.
He spent two years as a graduate assistant/video coordinator as his alma mater, Rice University, while getting his master’s degree in teaching. Culver broke down opponent’s game tapes, created highlight films, helped coach during practices, assisted with recruitment and helped conduct basketball camps.
While attending Rice as an undergraduate, Culver was a three-year letterman for the Owls basketball team as a walk-on where he played for Coach Wilson and Coach Gross. He was a four-time scholar athlete and a two-time Arthur Ashe Scholar during his playing career.
Culver has also dedicated an extensive amount of time coaching AAU teams and summer camps. He helped coach four different AAU teams and led the Champaign Wolf Pack to consecutive top-10 finishes in the AAU Nationals. He also assisted in coaching camps for several universities and organizations including, Rice, Stanford University, Clemson University, University of Illinois and TJ Ford Basketball Academy.
Culver and his wife, Julia, have two children, Teddy and Aaron. The family resides in Corpus Christi.
